To workshop in Faculty of communication news wire, AA reporters Declan McVeigh and Tuncay Kayaoğlu joined. In the workshop for news wire reporters, experienced reporters shared information about writing English news.
AA chief reporter McVeigh told about English news logic. McVeigh said how difficult is to make news in Turkey and ensampled some news. Then he called “Making detailed news is an important point for 5W1H but I think there are not enough details in Turkish news” and touched upon differences between English and Turkish news language.
Listing do’s and don’ts while writing English news, McVeigh said that it shouldn’t be benefited from one source. Then he said “avoid from sending ‘e-mail your questions’ to your interviewee and learn important points about the person who is interviewed like who is he/she, where did he/she come from and what is his/her job.”
Thinking that internet and Wikipedia is false as a reference, McVeigh drew attention to make a phone call is an old but safe for reaching the information. For students, McVeigh advice both libraries as a aidful reference and to continue their contacts in journalism lifetime. Then he emphasized to be professional and always check their stories before sending to the editors.
Emphasizing to keep track of the agenda, McVeigh said: “You have to always receive notifications from your cell phones. Knowing English is not enough for writing English stories. Important thing is reaching great informations”. Then he urge upon reading newspaper everyday and experiencing a qualified language also enjoying while doing this job.
In the end of the event continues part of question-answer, picking an interesting story for foreign press has been asked from students, and McVeigh informed students how to clear their way about chosen stories.
