IU Faculty of Communication Journalism Department member Prof. Dr. Suat Gezgin said that he knew some of the people who lost their lives at the attack. Prof. Dr. Gezgin said: “People should publish their opinions easily. Charlie Hebdo was making people realize and react by ironising world culture with sweet humour. People learn the lesson which caricatures tries to give, without noticing.”

Including owners, 12 people were killed savagely at Charlie Hebdo which was founded in 1969 under the name of Harakiri Hebdo. IU Faculty of Communication member Prof. Dr. Özgür Gönenç gave information about the past of the magazine and evaluated its future. Saying that it was closed because of the caricatures about Charlie De Gaulle and it was opened again under the name of ‘Charlie Hebdo’ in the beginning of 1970’s, Prof.Dr. Gönenç asserted that the magazine continued its publication life until 1981. “Magazine was closed again in 1981 because of the financial incapabilities. In 1922, it was opened again with the attempts by Jean Cabut.”. Prof. Dr. Gönenç ended his words by saying “Cabut gathered left winger and Marxist people at the magazine. Future of the magazine is unknown for now. In the attack, irreplaceable people lost their lives.”

Telling that the attack was horrible, IU Faculty of Communication member Prof. Dr. Aslı Yapar Gönenç stated that the magazine has a beautiful sense of humour. Prof. Dr. Yapar Gönenç said that “Every attack against press is bad.” Photo: www.sabah.com.tr
